Garbage Service FAQ

Garbage is collected Monday - Friday. Since specific days are determined by your location, please contact us to find out which day is assigned to your location.
Please have your trash to the curb by 5:30 a.m. or preferably the night before to help ensure pickup.
There are many benefits to utilizing a tote issued by WasteAway. They are stronger than what can be purchased in the store, they come with wheels for easy moving, a hinged lid, and are large enough for an average week’s worth of trash. They also won’t blow away as easily. One 95-gallon tote is the equivalent of 3 standard trashcans. If one of our totes gets broken from normal wear and tear, we will replace it at no cost to you. The first tote is included with our service and additional totes are available for a minimal fee.
You can put as many as you need, so long as it doesn’t exceed the regular household trash of your own residence.
Yes, Automotive fluids including oil and antifreeze, fluorescent bulbs, oil-based paints and solvents, SHARPS Disposal, lead acid batteries, and household hazardous waste are among the commonly banned items from the landfill. Empty latex paint cans are allowed if lids are removed and residual paint is completely dry. For more information on how to properly dispose of these hazardous materials, please contact the Lincoln Health department at 402-441-8040 or visit them at the Lincoln/Lancaster County Health Deptartment website.

Recycling FAQ

Yes - most large grocery chains, home improvement stores, and retailers like Wal-Mart and Target provide collection bins, usually by the main entrance for any clean and dry plastic bags. Examples include:
  • plastic grocery bags
  • dry-cleaning bags
  • bread bags
  • wraps from paper towels, bathroom tissue, napkins, diapers, and newspapers
Recycling plastic bags and wraps is important because they are made from valuable material that can be remade into dozens of useful new products like low-maintenance fencing and decking, building and construction products and of course, new bags.

Here are the materials we DO collect:
  • aluminum cans
  • tin cans
  • glass
  • plastics #1-#7
  • cardboard
  • pizza boxes (with minimal food)
  • all paper products
Here are the materials we DO NOT collect:
  • styrofoam
  • packing material
  • automotive containers
  • kleenex
  • paper towels
  • toilet paper
Please break down all cardboard boxes to ensure smooth pickup service.
Here are 5 reasons why you should consider recycling according to Care2.com:
  1. Recycling saves energy
    • Recycling saves energy because the manufacturer doesn’t have to produce something new from raw natural resources. By using recycled materials we save on energy consumption, which keeps production costs down.
  2. Recycling reduces landfills
    • Recycling reduces the need for more landfills. No one wants to live next to a landfill.
  3. Recycling preserves our resources and protects wildlife
    • By recycling, we reduce the need to destroy habitats for animals. Paper recycling alone saves millions of trees.
  4. Recycling is good for the economy
    • Recycling and purchasing recycled products creates a greater demand for more recycled goods. Goods made from recycled materials use less water, creates less pollution and uses less energy.
  5. Recycling helps our climate problems
    • Recycling produces considerably less carbon, which reduces the amount of unhealthy greenhouse gas omissions.

Yard Waste FAQ

According to the Lincoln City Landfill yard waste season runs from April 1st through November 30th every year. For our yard waste customers, starting December 1st through March 31st you are allowed to mix grass clippings, leaves, and pine needles with your trash.
Yard waste is grass clippings, leaves, pine needles. All other garden waste is allowed in the garbage but it is best if it is put in the yard waste tote.
No, you cannot use plastic bags for yard waste unless they are labelled "biodegradable" on the outside of the bags. We encourage you to utilize the yard waste tote provided by WasteAway, and/or paper lawn/leaf bags.
According to the Lincoln City Landfill, branches are considered garbage and should be put next to your garbage tote at the curb on pick up day. IMPORTANT: Branches must be cut into approximate 3-4 foot lengths and tied into a bundle with rope, twine, duct tape, etc. It doesn’t have to be fancy! Just make sure it’s a manageable bundle and placed next to the garbage tote at the curb.
If you've signed up for our annual yard waste service and cannot fit all of it in your tote, we will take the overflow.

Special Pickups FAQ

Yes! We're happy to haul away your appliances. Appliances will be assessed a one-time fee of $25. Please give us a call or contact to arrange a pickup.
Absolutely. Depending on the amount of material an additional fee may be assessed. To minimize costs, please cut all carpet and pad into 6 ft. rolls, and bundle them with rope, twine or duct tape. However, we strongly recommend donating items in good condition and/or putting them at the curb a day early with a “Free” sign, as these items often end up going to someone else with a need for them rather than the city landfill.
